Description
Elosuchus Cherifiensis Crocodile Jaw 197mmThis intriguing partial crocodilian jaw, measuring 197 mm in length, offers an excellent insight into the anatomy of one of the Late Cretaceous period's most successful aquatic predators. The specimen preserves a series of well defined alveoli (tooth sockets), including a larger socket exceeding 12 mm in diameter, clearly illustrating the arrangement and implantation of the dentition. This intriguing partial crocodilian jaw, measuring 197 mm in length, offers an excellent insight into the anatomy of one of the Late Cretaceous period's most successful aquatic predators. The specimen preserves a series of well-defined alveoli (tooth sockets), including a larger socket exceeding 12 mm in diameter, clearly illustrating the arrangement and implantation of the dentition.
Particularly noteworthy is the preservation of the bone surface, which exhibits numerous small foramina associated with sensory receptors. These specialised structures formed part of the highly developed sensory system that enabled crocodilians to detect movement and pressure changes in the water with remarkable precision, contributing to their effectiveness as apex predators.
Recovered from the renowned Ifezouane Formation of the Ténéré region, dating to the Early-Lower Cenomanian approximately 99.7-94.3 million years ago, the specimen has been provisionally attributed to Elosuchus cherifiensis, a long-snouted crocodilian related to modern gharials. Fossil material from this formation remains comparatively scarce, making this an especially appealing study specimen that combines scientific interest, anatomical clarity and strong display presence.
