A true centrepiece in both scale and rarity, this extraordinary fossil plate presents eight exceptionally preserved Paradoxides acadoparadoxides briareus trilobites, each retaining remarkable anatomical definition. Measuring an impressive 1.2 metres across, the specimen represents a scientifically significant fossil assemblage dating to the Mid Cambrian period, approximately 510-500 million years ago.
Once part of an ancient marine seabed, this fossiliferous sandstone matrix was discovered in the Zagora region of the Western Sahara, near the village of Sidi Abdullah ben el Hadj. The concentration of multiple trilobites upon a single plate is thought to reflect an episode of rapid burial or an unusual depositional event, providing rare insight into the marine ecosystems of the early Palaeozoic world. Each specimen displays the distinct segmentation, curvature, and structural elegance of its exoskeleton with exceptional clarity, preserving details that have endured for hundreds of millions of years.
The deep, dark stone matrix, interspersed with these fossilised forms, creates a striking visual contrast that immediately commands attention. Through its monumental scale, organic texture, and earth-derived tones, the piece lends itself naturally to interiors defined by strong materiality and considered design. It pairs effortlessly with raw stone, blackened steel, reclaimed wood, and leather, making it particularly suited to contemporary, industrial, wabi-sabi, and brutalist interiors.
Whether presented as a wall-mounted installation or as a free-standing focal point, this specimen introduces a sense of permanence, history, and natural drama into a space. More than a fossil display, it stands as a remarkable geological record, a monumental convergence of science, natural history, and sculptural presence.
