Replenish Electrolytes Lost During Exercise

Apple Lytes™ Powder has been expertly designed to replenish essential electrolytes and promote hydration to help avert dehydration and support optimal performance throughout the season.
Apple Lytes™ are deliciously palatable, and should be blended into feed. Always provide clean, fresh water.
Increased body temperature, whether from exercise, travel, or high environmental heat, leads to sweating in horses. The evaporation of sweat is a natural cooling mechanism that helps regulate body temperature.
As horses sweat, they lose fluids along with vital body salts or electrolytes found in sweat.
Key electrolytes include Sodium and Chloride, Potassium, Calcium, and Magnesium, which play critical roles in the body, particularly in muscle contraction, nerve function, and maintaining fluid balance in cells.

Typically, potassium is abundant in a horse’s diet, as most forages like pasture, hay, and haylage are rich in potassium.
However, sodium and chloride levels are considerably lower in forages, and even horses engaged in light work require daily supplementation of these two minerals.
While most compound feeds like cubes and mixes do provide some sodium and chloride in the form of salt, this may not suffice if intake is low, necessitating the addition of supplemental electrolytes. Furthermore, hard-working horses, especially in hot or humid conditions, lose greater amounts of electrolytes and water through sweat. Normal daily feed may not be enough to compensate for these losses, thus additional electrolytes are essential to replenish what has been lost, encourage drinking, and support rehydration for ongoing health and performance.
A horse engaged in moderate work, such as trotting and cantering, can lose up to 5-7 litres of fluid and 50-70g of electrolytes in an hour, with these losses escalating as the intensity or duration of work increases, particularly in hot and humid weather!

Consequently, ensuring proper hydration and replacing lost electrolytes is crucial not just for elite competition horses, but for all horses and ponies that sweat after work – from Pony Club rallies and long summer hacks to international eventers, show jumpers, and dressage competitors!
Since horse sweat contains a higher concentration of sodium and chloride than other body fluids, it’s vital to provide supplemental electrolytes in the right concentrations to maintain their desire to drink, thereby restoring both fluid balance AND replenishing electrolyte losses, facilitating recovery, and ensuring sustained peak performance.

This is particularly important during long-distance travel or extended shows and events, as fatigue will increase and performance may decline if electrolyte and fluid balance are not restored.

What advantages do Apple Lytes offer?

  • Carefully balanced levels of Sodium, Potassium, and Chloride to promote optimal hydration and replenish electrolyte losses for sustained performance.
  • Calcium and Magnesium are also included from readily available sources.
  • Low in sugar and suitable for all horses and ponies.
  • Highly palatable, featuring an appealing apple/cherry flavor that even picky eaters enjoy.

It is refreshing to read The Philosophy and Science of Caring. Caring is central to nursing and frequently in the nursing literature. Watson has revised and expanded her Caring Science and Philosophy, offering new insights, science and exemplars. This book is useful for all nurses, scholars, practitioners and educators. It should be required reading for nursing regardless of practice venue. Bravo, Jean!

Nursing research is not the place for me but it’s good to know this stuff before you become a nurse. I did use this for many assignments.
