She's a recipient of the Donald and Virginia Eckelberry Endowment from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, and her work has been featured in exhibitions from London and Madrid to Santo Domingo. Currently she is working on a field guide to the birds of Costa Rica. More from Alex about this collection: "Birds fascinate me. Like the snap of the hypnotist, they draw me back to the present moment. This series is inspired by some of those moments—all from this past summer. I’ve used conspicuous processes and sparkles of detail to keep viewers present with the surface of the work. Hard edges and flat layers conflict with the eye’s natural way of seeing and instead hint at the artist-naturalist’s process—namely the deep focus on individual elements, resulting in an image where every element is stitched together with equal clarity."
