This powerful tannin extract is made from the bark of Ceriops tagal, a mangrove tree traditionally used in Indonesia for timber and natural dyeing. Today, our extract is sustainably harvested through a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®)-certified project in Bali, ensuring a balance between ecological preservation and the economic needs of local communities.

The bark is carefully boiled, dried, and ground into powder, yielding a rich tannin extract that produces earthy russets, siennas, and reds, as well as deep blacks when combined with iron. Much like kakishibu (persimmon tannin), Ceriops loves cellulose fibers and develops character over time, darkening further under sunlight and UV exposure.

Sustainability & Tradition

  • Byproduct of controlled mangrove plantations
  • FSC®-certified: third-party audited for ecological responsibility
  • Selective harvesting protects mangrove ecosystems while supporting local livelihoods
  • Historically used for fishing gear, timber finishing, and textile dyeing in coastal Southeast Asia

Active dye components: condensed tannins, plobatannins, ellagic acid
CAS number: 1401-55-4
CI Natural Dye Number: none assigned

Shading Tips

  • Alum: warm russets and golden browns
  • Copper: deep reds and sienna tones
  • Iron (ferrous sulfate): purplish blacks (post-mordant only)
  • Slightly alkaline bath: shifts shades to deeper reds
  • Builds in layers: multiple dips yield stronger color, similar to indigo or kakishibu techniques

EKGs are difficult and I still don’t understand
Format: Paperback
Hey I’m in nursing school and I bought this… it’s not the pocket size, it’s actually a full size book. It brought tears to my eyes many times. I have no idea what a 3rd degree block is. Hopefully you can learn and be a good nurse! EKGs are for the doctors to read. So don’t be too hard on yourself. But you should probably know what normal sinus rhythm looks like… 👍🏼

My teacher thinks some of the ekgs are wrong
Format: Paperback
Can anyone put me in contact with the author of this book? My ekg/cardiology teacher is slandering her name and saying some of the rhythms she has in this book are wrong. Really upsets me because he is only a nurse and teaching a pre paramedic course. Doctors and cardiologist were the ones who cited this book. The rhythms are correct, my teacher just wants to think he is smarter than everyone else when it comes to cardiology. Otherwise I love this book and very helpful.

Excellent Book
Format: Paperback
As a nurse I struggle sometimes with rhythm recognition for some of the more complicated ones. This book is easy to read with many practice strips to help you comprehend even the complex details. Would highly recommend to anyone who needs to learn EKGs or brush up on their rhythm recognition skills. Great book!
