In april-mei bloeit de 'Merlot' met donkerroze bloemen die op kale takken verschijnen, wat niet alleen mooi is om te zien, maar ook vlinders en bijen aantrekt. De boom blijft relatief klein, met een hoogte van 2 tot 4 meter, waardoor hij zowel geschikt is voor kleine als grotere tuinen.

Deze boom gedijt het beste op een zonnige, windvrije plek in vruchtbare, goed doorlatende grond. De 'Merlot' is goed winterhard en vergt weinig onderhoud, waardoor hij een geweldige toevoeging is voor elke tuin.
